Firefly Glass Bracelet

Glass beads are a very popular souvenir item in Okinawa. Their deep blue color evokes the Okinawan sea, and Hotaru Glass, a popular souvenir, is a glass bead with a hole in it that is made using a molding technique called burner work, just like glass beads.

Craftsmen melt each piece of colored glass and roll it onto an iron core. Then, after the molten glass becomes like syrup, they layer silver foil on top, using special techniques to create beautiful colors.

Hotaru glass, a type of glass bead that did not originate in Okinawa, is a popular Okinawan souvenir and there is no clear record of when it first became popular. However, it began to attract attention in the late 1980s as an alternative to rare coral products, and it is said that its colors reminiscent of the deep sea have captured the hearts of tourists.
